Portrait of Idris Guessous

Professor Idris Guessous, Head of the Department of Primary Care Medicine (SMPR) at the HUG, was involved in managing the COVID-19 pandemic in the canton of Geneva.

After obtaining his medical degree and specialising in general internal medicine in Lausanne and Geneva, Professor Idris Guessous obtained his PhD in epidemiology at Emory University (Atlanta, USA). He joined the HUG in 2009, where he took charge of the Population Epidemiology Unit (UEP). In 2018, he became Head of the Department of Primary Care Medicine. He is a member of the Executive Committee of the Swiss Society of General Internal Medicine.

In response to the COVID-19 pandemic, Professor Idris Guessous was able to propose a reactive adaptation of the SMPR, for example by setting up the COVICARE which provides clinical and psychosocial follow-up for patients, and whose protocols and processes have been shared internationally.

In addition to his clinical and teaching activities, Professor Guessous maintains his research activities and is co-investigator of the seroprevalence studies carried out by the SMPR's UEP. He is the principal investigator of several other national and international population-based studies, the main areas of research being the role of environmental and contextual factors on health status, a subject he has linked to the pandemic by proposing a geographical and socio-economic analysis of COVID-19.

Finally, he is the principal investigator of the the @tchoum studystudy, an epidemiological surveillance tool used to monitor the COVID-19 pandemic, the aim of which is to detect clusters of COVID-19 at an early stage through public participation.
